iPhone 3.0 Wants: Peripheral Access + Lego Mindstorm = Robot Awesome

Dieter briefly interrupted his CTIA coverage to text us pretty much the headline you see above. What combination of Las Vegas and mobile phone pressers zapped iPhone controlled robot dreams into his cerebral cortex we don’t — and don’t want to — know, but the idea itself… Awesome indeed.

With the new iPhone 3.0 SDK, Apple has opened the door to peripheral access via both the 30-pin dock port and Bluetooth with zero-config. The above video is an ingenious work-around for direct control, but with the new functionality promised this summer?

He. Wants. And we do to.

Lego, start your integration program!

Ren and Stimpy once said something along the lines of “happy happy joy joy joy!!” and that seems to sum up my emotional state for this evening. I checked the App Store to find not one, but two updates to programs I love:
Blogpress claims to have fixed the White screen bug. This caused all the controls to disappear when you tried to edit post categories, so I’m hoping it’s really been taken care of. A huzzah is in order: HUZZAH!

1 2
Evernote 2.0 is a bit more substantial, featuring goodies like faster loading times, better offline notes support, and landscape editing! What’s more, flip the iPhone over and watch as all your notes are displayed coverflow style. Very slick! Wasn’t I just remarking on Evernote improvements the other day? Hmm. I’m going to publish it wishes lore often!
I covered the major changes to Evernote here, but there are a few more so check them out ok the App Store ASAP :)

iPhone 3.0 beta 2 is available to developers

TAGS: None

Earlier today, iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 was released to developers. The big news is that push notifications and in-app purchasing followed this release, giving developers a chance to try them out. Engadget has reported on significant instability with beta 1, so here's hoping that's been improved.

There's also good and bad news with this release. The good is that MMS and tethering are supported in beta 2. The bad news is that Apple asks developers not use them. It's like owning a Ferrari without wheels.

If you're a developer, you know how to get this. Let us know how it goes, and have fun.

Does Your Band Sound Like the Next…

TAGS: None

The following article is a guest post from Jonathan Balas of The Nashville Music Experience.

Nashville_music_experience There are too many bands and musicians that try to become what others have already achieved through imitation.  You say, "well, everything has been done before".  The problem with this logic is that for every human being that has ever existed on the face of this earth, not one DNA pattern has been "done before".  We all have something that differentiates us from the next person, which can be authentically expressed in our music.

I was recently attending a small acoustic show at a cafe here in Nashville a couple months ago, where I was listening to a country artist perform.  I was in shock at how much this artist looked and sounded like a particular artist that has made a huge name for themselves in the country market.   As I continued to listen and dissect this artist, I began to pick out the differences.  He didn't sing with as much vibrato, he had a bit more grit in his higher notes, and some other nuances... He was different, but not different enough to tell a difference unless you were paying close attention, possibly because he was trying to imitate somebody else instead of being himself.

But, if you want to break out of the cafe scene, you're going to have to invent music (not imitate) that takes your listeners to a place they've never been before, something new, something unexpected - music that reaches new dimensions.

It seems that despite ever growing competition, Pandora’s iPhone app is not just continuing to be massively popular, but is even seeing that iPhone download numbers are accelerating in recent months.

A report at the Digital Music News site lets us know that:

Just recently, Pandora reached the 4 million download mark, according to information shared by the company with Digital Music News.

The Pandora application first surfaced in July of last year, and reached two million downloads by early December.  Now, the pace is accelerating, though so is the competition.  Just recently, AOL confirmed that its Radio app has now reached 3.6 million, as of last week, also following a July release.

2 million downloads in the last three and a bit months - that seems very impressive to me.  Radio / music apps are just a wee bit popular on the iPhone it seems. :)

Legendary rocker Neil Young is releasing a new album inspired by his electric-car project LincVolt.

The "grunge father," along with biodiesel pioneer Johnathan Goodwin, are developing a commercially viable electric power system in a 1959 Mark IV Lincoln Continental, which they hope will get the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon and take the $10 million Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize.

Young's classic "Long May You Run" could have been a proper theme song for the project. Instead, he's written new material about the LincVolt, featuring the crisis in the car industry and the economic downturn in general.

In "Fuel Line," he sings about the car's technology: "Awesome power of electricity, stored for you in this big battery." In "Johnny Magic," about the prize he's aiming for, "she goes long range on domestic green fuel, 100 miles a gallon is the Continental rule."

So far the concept album has received mixed reviews both in the music and green communities.
