Hypebot Favicon First, a big thanks to Tim Westergen of Pandora for writing a thoughtful response to the mini-firestorm caused by yesterday's "Pandora Forces $29.95 Payments From Indie Bands" post and poll. And I made my reservations yesterday to participate in the resurection of the grandaddy of all music conferences The New Music Seminar on July 21st in NYC.  I hope to see some of you there. $99 discount registration ends July 5th.

MORE MUSIC INDSUTRY NEWS:

  • Legal Microsoft, Yahoo And Real sued for failing to get all the necessary licenses. (Techdirt) TD's Mike Masnick is right again on his analysis. The real story here is how stupidly complex it is to license music.
  • Michael Jackson airplay & album sales skyrocket. (FMQB) I have not seen the full charts yet but @coolfer tweeted from Billboard that "Michael Jackson wreaked havoc on top albums last week. No top 100 new release gained over the previous week. Total album sales down 8%" and "Michael Jackson catalog albums outsold the Black Eyed Peas' new album. 241,000 (58%) of MJ's album sales last week were digital". Amazing. And how down would the sales have been without MJ?

iPhone Dev-Team: ultrasn0w Users Avoid iPhone 3.1 Beta!

macbook_stop_jailbreak

Right in time for iPhone 3.1, the iPhone Dev-Team has begun issuing their usual warnings about jailbreak/unlock users and new firmware updates:

ultrasn0w users must stay away from official 3.1 (incl. betas) until we release the tools for it, or you’ll lose unlock!

Tempting as a tasty new beta may be, if you can’t live without your hacked iPhone, don’t hit that update button now, or any time before the iPhone Dev-Team has new, tested tools ready for you.

Once again, you’ve been warned!

WWDC Demo: Master Jumperton and Battle of Pirate Bay (preview)

Master Jumperton is a simple game where you swipe to create platforms for Master Jumperton to continually jump higher and higher. There are some similar games on the store, but Jumperton is well-crafted and features a high scores board and basic options. Master Jumperton isn't yet available on the store.

The Battle of Pirate Bay will be available July 1, we are told, and it's a more involved game. That isn't to say it is complicated, as anyone familiar with Flight Control or Harbor Master's game mechanic will understand what to do. Battle goes one step beyond time and path management to add the element of battle with waves of enemies. You have to balance ammo and the health of your base in the bay plus the routing of faster or slower ships with different capabilities all while moving your finger around to direct traffic, as it were. Very fast-paced, and it looks like a lot of fun. We'll tweet when it lands in the store this week.

Both games are from veteran mobile developers Muteki, who developed Maze Finger and Topple 2 for ngmoco. Topple 2 won an Apple design award at this year's WWDC.

Update: The Battle of Pirate Bay (iTunes link) is now available in the store.

iPhone 3.1: Video Editing: Save As...

Early word from TiPb commenters and the Twitter show some new iPhone 3.1 features found already:

  • Non-destructive video editing means trimming a clip no longer saves over the original video but gives you the option to “Save as copy…”
  • Voice Control now works over Bluetooth
  • iPhone vibrates when moving icons
  • Updated AT&T profile to 4.2
  • Updated modem firmware to 5.08.01

Behind the scenes changes abound as well:

  • Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
  • APIs to allow third party apps to access videos and edit them.

Update: Yes, MMS buttons appear to be back for AT&T users, but as with early iphone 3.0 Betas, they’re non-functional on standard devices. Whether they survive to the official release this time (they were removed in 3.0 Beta 5), who knows?

Apple releases 3.1 beta for iPhone SDK

TAGS: None

Apple has released a 3.1 beta for the iPhone SDK. Both the SDK beta and firmware are available for testing and development to paid members of the iPhone developer program. As pre-release software, any details about this new release remain under NDA.

A pre-installation advisory and beta release notes are available as per Apple's usual release strategy. As before, you cannot use the 3.1 SDK to create applications for submitting to the App Store, so if you plan to download it be prepared to create a separate installation directory.

The new release comes just on the heels of the public 3.0 firmware. Its full-dot-number indicates that it contains more than just minor bug fixes (a relatively minor revision would probably be listed as 3.0.1).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

From the team team that brought us Barista, Cellar aims to give wine the same app love coffee has enjoyed for a while now:

Cellar is a portable, swipeable showcase of what’s currently in your cellar or wine rack, plus the Garage feature lets you store wine that you’ve decided you might buy again.

Cellar has been submitted to the App Store and should be available… as soon as Apple decides to make it so.

In the meantime, enjoy the screenshots after the break!
