NNEKA’s “The Uncomfortable Truth” – Video

MUSIC NEWS -  Check out Nneka's video for "The Uncomfortable Truth," off her debut USA release Nneka Concrete Jungle (out February 2, 2010 via Yo Mama/Decon/Epic Records).

You don't likely know her, Nneka is a talented singer/songwriter/rapper who's likely to be one of the most "likely to catch on" artists of 2010.  Her roots are in Nigeria and Germany, giving her a distinct transcultural sound.  She's also bringing us a message of hope, love, and optimism, and isn't shy about  being political;  in her lyrics and the imagery she uses.

Nneka's "The Uncomfortable Truth" firmly showcases here quite passionate and soulful vocals as they ride high over mellow, vintage horns.

JASON YATES, Solo Album and Citizen Cope Tour

TAGS: None

MUSIC NEWS - JASON YATES is lending his keyboard skills to Citizen Cope for a two–month tour that starts in February, 2010, while he continues to promote his own self-titled solo disc.  You remember Jason, he previously appeared on Citizen Cope’s 2004  The Clarence Greenwood Recordings. The tour starts up on  February 2 at Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC, and continues late into April (full itinerary below).

Meanwhile, JASON will celebrate his self-titled solo CD (out via Vapor Records) with a special free performance at his artist’s loft near L.A.’s Chinatown on January 9, 2010. The evening is set to feature all of the CD’s musicians; longtime Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford, Acetone guitarist Mark Lightcap, and drummers Oliver Charles (JASON’s former bandmate in Ben Harper’s Innocent Criminals) and session-man Gary Mallaber (Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt) – along with a handful of surprise guests. The set will culminate with a jam session befitting both the low-key venue and JASON’s philosophy behind the CD.

He said recently; “There was always a certain way I wanted to play, no matter what band I was in,”. “It had to be natural, and have a strong groove to it. When I was writing the songs on the new album, that idea was at the front of my mind the whole time.”

That groove traverses blues and rock, gospel and soul; it flirts with jazz and country. There’s a sense of space here, whether that space resonates with impressionistic guitar licks and JASON’s B3 on songs like “Nobody So Far” and “Paper Tents,” or it’s filled only with the melancholy of the bare and beautiful closing track “Sing For You.”

More @ myspace.com/jasonyatesofficial.  Specs on JASON’s free L.A. show are: January 9, 2010 / 8pm at  1637 N. Spring St., Los Angeles 90012. Map @ JasonYates

Classic Concert Film, “The T.A.M.I. Show” to Arrive on DVD

TAGS: None

MUSIC NEWS - Long in our vhs library, one of the rarest / coolest rock events ever captured on film, the 1964 concert known as The T.A.M.I. Show, that featuring TAMI_show_art performances by the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, the Supremes, among others, will be released for the first time on dvd on March 23, 2010 (via Shout! Factory). The T.A.M.I. Show: Collector’s Edition will include new bonus features including new commentary by director Steve Binder, original T.A.M.I Show radio spots, and a 20-page booklet with liner notes and rare photos and memorabilia.

The T.A.M.I. Show was filmed live in 1964 at the Santa Monica Auditorium, a mere seven months after the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and introduced the Swinging ’60s to the USA. The film has never been out on DVD, long discontinued on vhs, and hasn’t been seen in its entirety since it originally appeared in theaters, including its "world premiere" at 33 Los Angeles area theaters on November 14, 1964. This new video release has been mastered from a new High-Definition transfer and restored to its original length, this complete version features the Beach Boys performances that were removed shortly after the film’s initial theatrical run due to contractual issues.

The T.A.M.I. Show (added to the Library of Congress's National Film Registry in 2006 )is the first concert movie of the rock era, capturing such superstars as the Rolling Stones (with the late Brian Jones), James Brown, Chuck Berry, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, the Miracles (featuring Smokey Robinson), and many other Motown and British Invasion acts in their early prime. In addition to the five rock groups, all artists were backed by a band that we've now come to know as “the Wrecking Crew,” famed for playing on all the Phil Spector-produced hits, and included future stars Glen Campbell and Leon Russell among others. Fanita James, Jean King, and future solo star Darlene Love, billed as The Blossoms, provide backing vocals.

Classic ELVIS COSTELLO & the ATTRACTIONS Concert From 1978 Due for Audio Release

TAGS: None

MUSIC NEWS - Elvis Costello and The Attractions' classic Hollywood High concert from 1978 will finally be released on CD in January 2010.  Individual tunes had been made available over the years, but the Univeral Music Enterprise release next month will be the first time the entire performance has been put out.

Appropriately called "Live at Hollywood High", the release will include 20 songs and out on January 12, 2010 and will give us 11 previously unreleased songs, say UME.

Elvis Costello was a mere 23 at the time of the concert, and just gaining wide recognition in the USA.  The show was recorded before a packed house at Hollywood (CA) High School's auditorium on June 4, 1978. The tracklist list includes some of his best known songs, like "Alison," "Mystery Dance," "Waiting for the End of the World," Miracle Man" and "Watching the Detectives" and previously unreleased versions of "Lip Service," "The Beat," "Living in Paradise," "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," and others.

THE ANTLERS Announce Tour Plans with The Editors

TAGS: None

MUSIC NEWS - Often, you have to put yourself first, no matter how tough that notion seems; no matter how much time and effort you’ve already put into someone,  the person who’s reduced your very being to its absolute core. Just check with Peter Silberman, the string-pulling founder of The Antlers, a solo project that suddenly went wide with the self-released Hospice LP (now receiving a proper widespread pressing through Frenchkiss). The first Antlers release to feature two key permanent players; the owerhouse drummer Michael Lerner and multi-instrumentalist Darby Cicci, it’s an album with a sound that’s actually as ambitious as its concept.

Hospice came from the idea of caring for a terminal patient who’s mentally abusive to you,” said Silberman recently. “You don’t have the right to argue with them, either, because they’re the one who’s dying here; they’re the one that’s been dealt a wrong hand. So you take it, but you can only take so much. Eventually, you realize that this person is just destroying you.”

Hospice’s 10 distinct chapters resonate on debilitating sonic and lyrical levels, from the hypnotic harp and tension-ratcheting build of “Two” to the sing-or-sink choruses of “Bear” and the speaker-jarring peaks of “Sylvia,” certainly one of the year’s most immediate epics.  Here, amidst contrasting shards of ambient noise, sweeping strings and smoky horns, is where The Antlers fully transcend Silberman’s singer-songwriter beginnings;  a striking escalation of expectations first hinted at on 2008’s New York Hospitals EP. The progression doesn’t end there, either. In a move that could be taken as the riff-raking extension of his thorough guitar training (from the age of 6 ‘til right before college), “Atrophy” and “Wake” delve into sheets of distortion, subtle shades of soul, cicada-like effects and enough movements to fill an entire EP.

“We were going for something that’d be dense but not too complicated,” explains Silberman. “I hate the word ‘lush,’ but I guess that’s the best way of describing it. The structures are like pop songs—verse/chorus, verse/chorus—but the sound is a little more shoegaze-y or post-rocky.”

It’s about to get even more complicated, too, as The Antlers' Technicolor-tinged trio take all of Hospice’s songs—and three previous releases—in a completely different direction, jettisoning a note-for-note rendition of the record for “a massive sound” doused in delay, reverb and unrehearsed chaos. And to think Cicci was a stage actor with a desire to drop it all for music just a few years ago.

“Hospice was the clear indication that this isn’t a singer-songwriter thing at all,” says Silberman. “Whatever we record next is going to define the three of us as a ‘band.’  He furthers with; “I always figured I’d be the ‘shredder’ in a group… But things somehow ended up this way.”
