App Store Takes A Page From The Amazon Playbook

TAGS: None

If you’ve ever shopped on Amazon’s web site, you are probably familiar with the “Also Bought” suggestion system that offers items to compliment the purchase you’re presently contemplating, dressed up* as “Customers who bought this item also bought…”.

Apple has now taken this concept to the App Store.  Below the App’s reviews, you’ll see a similar set of suggestions:

Yet another way in which Apple is changing the face of the App Store.   At the very least, there are some similar/related apps to check out without having to navigate the search feature.   That’s a good thing.

* Some time ago, I looked up a Tom Clancy book on Amazon.  One of the items that customers “also bought” was another Tom Clancy book that wasn’t due to be released for another few days – draw your own conclusions…

I Wanna Be Like Tony: Awesome iPhone Photography

Many of us tend to think of our iPhone’s camera as the “improptu” camera that is called into service when you want to take a picture but didn’t bring a “real” camera with you.

I was guilty of that as well; having not only a “pocket” Canon Powershot camera but also professional Canon digital cameras with professional lenses, I certainly considered the iPhone’s camera as, well, an afterthought, really.   Handy to have, to be sure, but not what one would use for serious photography.

Boy, was I wrong.

I recently stumbled upon the wonderful site iPhoneography – which focuses, as you might guess, on photography using the iPhone and the myriad photography Apps for it.    There, I discovered a showcase gallery of images made by Tony Cece  – and they are stunning.   Not just for their photographic qualities, but also for the fact that they were made with an iPhone and a handful of two and three dollar Apps.

Dragon Dictation Hits App Store

The long awaited Dragon Dictation is now available in the App Store, and, despite predictions of prices in the $30.00 range is absolutely free

Dragon Dictation converts your speech to editable text that can then be sent to a text message, email, or the clipboard.

I’ve been testing the app (which requires an internet connection), and am so far highly impressed with its accuracy.   This one looks like a keeper!

The iPhone Is Dead. Long Live The iPhone!

iPhone-Killer The end of the year is traditionally when people take stock of and plan changes to their lives.   Naturally, we here at JAiB also take stock of the iPhone’s life – where it’s been, where it’s going, etc.    So before we speculate on the next iPhone that theoretically will be introduced next year, let’s take a look back and relive some of the sage wisdom dispensed about the iPhone before and after its initial release.

Developer Gets Ripped From iTunes Store For Ratings Fraud

image iPhone App Developer Molinker had lots of photography-related apps published in the App Store.   Unfortunately, they also had tons of fake reviews as well.   Now, that “ratings-pumping” tactic has backfired badly, as they (and their apps) have been removed from the App Store.   How was this fraud uncovered?  By a sharp-eyed iPhone user and a web site catering to iPhone photography.    Click here to read the details at iPhoneography.com.

Spotted: DLO WallDock Dock/Charger for iPhone and iPod

TAGS: None

Every so often you see a product, and you slap your forehead saying, “why didn’t I think of that?”.   This is one of those times.

image The DLO WallDock is a minimalist’s dream, allowing you to store and charge your iPod or iPhone at any convenient wall outlet.   No cables, no external plugs, and no knocking the darned thing off the counter/dresser while reaching for your wallet.   In households like mine, this also means being able to store/charge it that much more out of the reach of little hands.   It is compatible with a wide variety of iPods and every iPhone.

The WallDock retails for $24.99 (according to DLO), but if you really want to spend $5 more, you can get it at Best Buy.
