Documents To Go, the top-notch iPhone office suite app, today received a welcome update to version 2.1.

Among many bug fixes and performance improvements (which I must say are quite noticeable), DataViz, Inc. has significantly improved the way the app works with PDF files. You can now open password-protected PDFs with a new “enhanced PDF viewer.”

Also included are improvements to general document navigation, such as thumbnail views, full screen with floating controls, tap zooming, and “go to page” options.

Current users of Documents To Go will get this update for free by checking for updates in the App Store. If you don’t already use Documents To Go, and have the need to edit Word and Excel files on the go, I strongly suggest you take a close look at this app. It’s most certainly worth the $9.99 price.

*Note: Documents To Go is on sale for CYBER MONDAY! You can pick up Documents To Go for only $7.99 today only (ends 12/1/09). Save $2 and grab it now!

Acrobits, the company behind the excellent voice-over-IP iPhone app, Softphone, is celebrating their 1 year anniversary. In celebration of this achievement, which is a great achievement considering how difficult the iPhone app development world is these days, Acrobits has provided us with 10 (that’s right – TEN!) promo codes to give away!

Wait! There’s more! In addition to giving away ten promo codes for Softphone, I should bring to your attention that for anyone who is looking to get this app and who doesn’t win a code, Acrobits has dropped the price of Softphone from $6.99 down to only $2.99 during their anniversary sale (app store link). But this low price won’t last long, so make sure to grab it up now while it’s cheaper! That is if you don’t win a free copy from us! :)

If you’re not familiar with Acrobits Softphone, check out my review from earlier this fall here. Basically, Softphone is an app that allows you to make voip calls using an existing SIP account from your iPhone over a wifi connection. Incoming calls to your SIP number (if enabled) are pushed to Softphone using push notifications.

Contest Deadline: Saturday, November 21, 2009 5:00pm US Pacific Time.

Details after the break…

Tumblr iPhone App Update – Minor Version Number Change, Lots Of New Features!

IMG_0021

Tumblr’s iPhone app, also called Tumblr, was updated to version 1.1 today. Now while a .1 update would generally signify bug fixes or a minor update, in this instance Tumblr 1.1 actually includes several major new features. If you have a Tumblr site and an iPhone, you can’t go wrong with this free, but very well done app.

For those who aren’t familiar with Tumblr, it is the major player in the “mini-blog” or “tumblelog” market right now, competing with Posterous. Mini-blogging is a step between “micro-blogging” (ie. Twitter, FriendFeed) and traditional blogging (ie WordPress, Blogspot, this site, etc.). Mini-blogging is typically short, frequent, mixed-media posts with little or no narrative. The idea is to quickly share some form of media in a way that’s more than a Twitter post but not quite a full blog post.

This update does indeed include various bug fixes, but it also brings the iPhone app closer to the full web experience. iPhone 3GS owners can now post videos using the app. Editing past posts is now possible from the iPhone, as is the ability to specify tags for posts, publish a post as a draft, private, or even schedule it for later. Previously, a “draft” post was local to the iPhone until published. Now, when you “publish” as a draft, it is saved up to your Tumblr account as a draft, ready to be edited and/or published later.

More screen shots and a list of all the new features are after the break.

Shazam Launches Paid Version Of Its iPhone App, Imposes Limits On Free Version

TAGS: None

Copyright © 2009 Josh Gard. Visit the original article at http://justanotheriphoneblog.com/wordpress/iphone-application-reviews/shazam-launches-paid-version-imposes-limits-on-free-version/ .

Shazam Entertainment has recently launched a new, paid version of its popular music identification app for the iPhone. Shazam Encore (iTunes Link), which is now available in the App Store for $4.99, contains all of the features of the free version, while also featuring a new, speedier interface and popular music charts in the app.

As a result of launching Shazam Encore for a price, the free version, called simply Shazam, adds a limitation of only 5 music tags per month for new customers in an effort to entice them to upgrade to Shazam Encore. It is my understanding, however, that existing users of Shazam will be grandfathered into unlimited song tagging as they have been used to.

According to this post on the Wall Street Journal Online, this move to a paid business model is a direct result of the declining economy which has decreased ad-supported revenue. Previously, Shazam was supported by in-app advertising, which was enough to cover the cost of the app. With ad revenue on the decline, Shazam Entertainment needed to find another way to monetize their service to avoid discontinuing the app altogether.

Boxcar gets quiet time settings via hidden feature

boxcar-quiet-times

Earlier this evening, Jonathan George revealed how one can enable a hidden feature in Boxcar to configure a Quiet Time, during which time sounds and popup alerts will not occur. The Boxcar icon will still receive badge updates, however.

Apparently, this feature was originally planned for the recent 2.1 update, but the backend wasn’t quite ready in time. So the feature was hidden to be enabled at a later date.

Based on the revealing of this hidden feature, I expect a 2.2 version will include the Quiet Time setting already enabled. But you don’t have to wait until then. With a few quick steps, you can also have quiet times today, using the 2.1 version you already have.

I’ve been using the LogMeIn Ignition app on my iPhone for a couple months now, enabling me to remotely access all of my computers, as well as several family members and friends, allowing me to easily manage and troubleshoot problems, right from my iPhone screen.

LogMeIn Ignition uses an intuitive touch interface to move around your computer screen, taking full advantage of pinch-zoom and swipe-to-scroll functions. One of the main issues plaguing remote access apps on mobile devices is in the way the device is able to present the computer’s much larger screen on the mobile device’s small screen, while still remaining functional.
