MUSIC NEWS - DMW (from the New York Times) reports that the creators of peer-to-peer tech firms that include file-sharing service Kazaa, Internet phone service Skype and video service Joost announced their plans to develop a new subscription music service called Rdio. Details on the new venture were few, but Zennstrom and Friis have established offices for Rdio in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and plan to offer Rdio online and to mobile devices by early next year. No word on whether the service will use the pair's expertise in peer-to-peer technology.
Rdio jumps in the music service battle with similar services such as Rhapsody, Napster and Spotify & MOG (the last two are currently gearing up for launches).
EMI head of digital business development Mark Piibe told The Times that the label is in discussion with Rdio, and that there "was no reluctance to deal with" Kazaa creators Zennstrom and Friis.
